Student Opinions on When the Holiday Season Officially Starts

The holiday season is one of the jolliest times of the year, marked by fun festivities, great food, and a cozy feeling in the air. However, the start of the holiday season can be a point of contention. Some think it should start the day after Halloween, while others think it should start a week before Christmas. Sequoyah students gave their opinions and shared some of their holiday traditions with their family and friends.

Lorelei Katcher ’26 thinks that the start to the holiday season depends on where you are in the US. For her, the holiday season begins in late November or early December. Additionally, Katcher believes that the Halloween spirit goes on for a while in Los Angeles, even into early November. “Specifically in LA, Halloween goes on for a really long time. You have Universal Studios Horror Nights, and that runs through mid November,” Katcher noted. She believes that Christmas music before November is fine, but noted it shouldn’t be played in public to avoid being obnoxious to others. “If that’s what makes you happy, then go do it, but definitely don’t push that on to other people.”

Ben Cox ’28 thinks the holiday season should begin on December 1st, and he believes that a break from Christmas music in December is beneficial to avoid annoyance and to make it less repetitive in the long run. When asked about his favorite kind of holiday music, Cox responded, “all of the songs sound very similar and make me insane, except for Mariah Carey.” He went on to explain that Mariah Carey is different from other artists because “She has a better voice than anyone else that sings Christmas songs. Her songs are more modern and original.”

Finally Kenya Gordon ’26 doesn’t want to even think about Christmas before December 1st. He thinks that November should be the month to celebrate the autumn season, and Christmas shouldn’t even be mentioned during that month. “Have you ever seen an advent calendar that has November 29th on it?” he asked. For Gordon, the holiday season doesn’t begin until December 12th, following the traditional 12 days of Christmas rule. He also mentioned that Christmas music is already annoying enough, which makes it even harder to listen to before December.

Sequoyah students have many mixed feelings about when the holiday season should officially start. Most of them think that once December begins, the season should too. However, some people start thinking about it in late November. Whenever you start celebrating the holidays, make sure to spread the cheer for all to hear!
