The Benefits of Owning a Cat

Owning a cat has many more benefits than most people think. Not only do these furry companions provide mental support, but they also benefit their owners’ physical health. Many studies have shown that cats improve heart health by lowering the chance of cardiovascular diseases and reducing allergies over time. As far as mental benefits go, cats have been proven to reduce stress, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. Petting a cat releases a chemical into our brains called oxytocin, commonly referred to as the “love hormone.” This chemical reduces anxiety and stress and can help foster a sense of empathy and trust. A study in 2022 showed that owning a cat reduces social isolation and loneliness, which often leads to depression.

Additionally, people with autism can benefit from owning a cat as cats pick up on many nonverbal cues. In 2023, a study compared children with autism who owned cats to those who didn’t. The study revealed that autistic children who owned cats showed a better ability to share and consider others’ feelings and displayed more social behaviors.

Cats can be a great choice as a pet, but they don’t come without needs. Although they are somewhat less social than dogs, they still need regular socialization with another cat or their owner. Cats also require mental stimulation, especially kittens, which means being actively played with for 10-15 minutes, three times per day. They require regular litter box cleanings, food, and depending on the breed, regular brushing. For many, the pros of owning a cat are worth it, but for some, the responsibility may be too much. Do research before deciding to own a cat as they take a significant amount of work and effort every day. Still, in light of the associated research–and speaking from personal experience–they’re well worth it.
