The Post Rock Climbing Gym
A new indoor rock climbing gym just opened only a few minutes away from Sequoyah’s high school campus at 1100 North Fair Oaks Avenue! Indoor rock climbing is a fun and popular way to build strength and agility, and is safer and more accessible than outdoor rock climbing. Whether you’re looking for a new hobby, a workout, a fun place to hang out, or a way to satisfy your PE requirement, The Post might be the place for you!
I visited the gym, tried the bouldering walls, hung out in the weight training gym, and spoke to a few other visitors about their experiences. Here’s what you might want to know: The Post is the newest member of the Touchstone group of 14 climbing gyms throughout California. The prices are a little steep for a one time visit but the membership deals are quite reasonable. They have rental gear, including shoes and harnesses. You do need an adult to sign your waiver for you if you’re under 18.
They have a parking lot, bike racks, and are easily accessible by public transportation. They’re open 10am-6pm everyday except for a few national holidays.
There are 22,500 square feet of climbing terrain divided between 6,500 square feet of bouldering and 16,000 square feet of 40 foot high rope climbing wall. They don’t have spools so you need a belaying partner for rope climbing.
They also have yoga classes and access to the weight lifting gym included with the membership, as well as showers and a sauna to wash up after your workout!
I thought the gym was pretty good considering it’s still a work in progress. Some of the positive features are that the bouldering routes are very clearly marked, both with starting positions and difficulty. They range from V0 (easiest) to V10 (hardest) and there are many routes to choose from at each difficulty level. They rotate the routes pretty often so you don’t get tired of them. The bathrooms are very clean and comfortable and entirely hands-free! On the other hand, there are definitely a few areas that could be improved, such as being able to go on top of the walls and having gender neutral bathrooms.
I previously climbed at The Stronghold, a well established and popular gym near downtown Los Angeles, but given the quality and convenience, in the future I will probably choose The Post.
