Teacher Spotlight: Eric Libicki
Sequoyah is a place of many excellent and passionate teachers and recently we have been lucky to gain another: Eric Libicki. Libicki is a new math teacher at Sequoyah and has taught Geometry, Statistics, and Ancient Numbers. He is currently teaching Algebra 1 and Economics. Last semester you may have seen him in room 4 teaching geometry, or perhaps you’ve seen him this semester in room 1. He joined Sequoyah at the beginning of the school year in 2022 and we are all excited to have him and welcome him into our community!
Libicki graduated from Occidental College, and then received his master's degree in Geophysics from USC. He then went on to teach. Libicki taught at Occidental College for 3 years and at Westridge for 18 years. Westridge is an all-girls high school near Sequoyah, on Orange Grove. Of his transition to Sequoyah, he noted, “It has met and exceeded my expectations. There were about four different things I was looking for when I decided it was time to switch, and this place pretty much has every single one of those.'' He is “really glad it worked out.” Libicki is delighted to be teaching here and has recognized some students whose siblings he taught at Westridge—it’s a small world!
If you have Libicki in a class, you’re in for some fun facts! He has six fun facts that he shares with his students as an exciting introduction to himself and his class. One of his fun facts is that he is trying to visit all 10 Canadian provinces and has already visited “all of them except for Saskatchewan and Manitoba.” His goal to explore all ten provinces seems fitting, considering he majored in geophysics. Libicki added that he chose to major in geophysics because it let him take "a third geology, a third physics, and a third math.” Libicki likes to include a bit of a science twist to math and add some applications from other disciplines. He said that he tries “to incorporate lots of other things into math, and so math” gives him more freedom to “bring a lot of other topics in to try to make it more exciting.”
Some hobbies that Libicki enjoys include board games and escape rooms. Libicki has been to over 220 escape rooms and has created three escape rooms himself! On the topic of food, he loves pizza with mushrooms, pineapple, and garlic, and enjoys a good gnocchi with a pink sauce. However, “The gnocchi cannot be rubbery” and “It has to have a very nice consistency.” One fun fact about Libicki is that he creates his own Halloween costumes each year. He has already made 16 of his own costumes when he was at Westridge and is recycling them back into use for Sequoyah. His favorite costume that he has created is the one he wore last Halloween. Libicki shared that he “figured I could repeat the family favorites. And so the interactive Sudoku costume is probably one of my favorites.” Make sure to look out for Libicki’s next Halloween costume! In the meantime, say hi to Libicki around campus or ask him for an escape room recommendation!
