Make it “Makisupa”: Sit and Study or Grab and Go at Recently Established Silver Lake Café

Local coffee shops—especially in Los Angeles’ melting pot of traditional and innovative cuisine—are a must. Cozy, creative, and comment-worthy café Makisupa Coffee Bar (named after hit Phish song “Makisupa Police”) is a relatively new Silver Lake staple.

Located just across the street from delicious Italian restaurant Blairs sits a comfortable, naturally lit café with drinks, grab-and-go foods, and an assortment of flowers, coffees, Silver Lake Track Club merch, and various trinkets. Makisupa Coffee Bar, or for short “Makisupa,” was founded by duo Howie Goldklang, the cofounder of Silver Lake Track Club (hence the merch), and hairstylist Carly Flynn (who runs the hair establishment next door!). This creative and delightful space opens bright and early each morning and runs until evening hours, sometimes hosting community events that can be found on their website. As a long time Silver Lake resident who frequents Makisupa, I felt it apt to show some appreciation for my favorite dash and dine (or sit, enjoy a drink, and study).

Because I’m selfish and obsessed with my go-to order—an egg and cheese on a Kaiser roll (with the bun warmed, not toasted), a chocolate brownie cookie (it’s vegan!), and an iced chai with oat milk—I’m going to review just that! So, enjoy my review of my Makisupa favorites!

Makisupa’s egg and cheese includes a slice of cheddar cheese and a fluffy egg compacted by your bread of choice (bagel, Kaiser roll, or croissant). Personally, I pick the Kaiser roll and ask for it to be warmed, not toasted (I prefer a softer bite). This quick and hot meal is the perfect bite to get you through the day, full of different creamy and smooth textures, umami flavors, and cute retro wrapping.

A personal favorite pastry of mine, Makisupa’s chocolate brownie cookie, has just enough sea salt to add a good crunch. In addition to the crunch of salt on the outside that helps balance out the cookie’s sweetness, the inside is mildly gooey. This must-have cookie really does not disappoint!

And, of course, a good meal must be accompanied by a good drink. Makisupa’s iced chai has just enough caffeine to keep you going through the day and is available with different milk options (almond, oat, or whole). I enjoy my chai with oat milk because I feel it brings out a more earthy flavor. While the chai is not as spice-filled as I’d like, it’s refreshing enough and makes me happy.

From the bodega style menu to the cute trinkets, Makisupa is the place to put on a list of must visit cafés in LA. So, check out Makisupa Coffee Bar at 2894 Rowena Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90039!
